Guidelines for Scripting languages in Test Automation

Mary R. Sweeney

Concepts

It’s no secret to many test teams that the use of scripting languages such as Perl, JavaScript, or VBScript can enhance their test automation projects. In fact, many teams have taken it to the next level and have built their own sophisticated automated test tools making extensive use of scripting languages. In this presentation we’ll explore some guidelines for using scripting languages on a test project: Why and when to use scripting languages, what possible benefits can be achieved and the common pitfalls teams can fall into that can sink an automated test project that incorporates scripting languages.

Objectives

• Potential uses for scripting languages in an automated test project
• How to interleave scripting languages successfully in an existing project
• How to get started on a new project using a scripting language
• How to successfully select a scripting language
